Red houses with snow-laden roofs and a yellow building line the frozen ground, backed by dark spruces and bare trees. In front, a woman in a headscarf bends over a hole cut in the ice, rinsing white laundry beside a brown basket. The scene is Pekka Halonen's Washing on the Ice, painted in 1900.

For the Paris World Exhibition of 1900, the Finnish pavilion showed twelve paintings meant to depict Finnish trades and occupations. Halonen contributed two of them: this one and Ilveksen hiihtäjä (The Lynx Hunter). The work now belongs to the Ateneum collection. Note how an everyday winter chore becomes the subject of a full-scale painting.
