Mist fills the valleys below a rocky summit where a man in a dark coat stands with his back to the viewer, a walking stick in hand. Crags, trees and a distant mountain break through the fog under a streaked, cloudy sky. The painting is Caspar David Friedrich's Wanderer above the Sea of Fog.
In 1818 the German Romanticist painted the scene, and it remains among the defining images of Romanticism and of his own work. It belongs to the Hamburger Kunsthalle. Because the wanderer's face stays hidden, the viewer shares his gaze over the fog stretching endlessly into the distance.
