A yellow eye and a red, half-open mouth peer out through tall grass. The striped tiger crouches low while a storm wind bends branches and leaves. Thin pale streaks of rain cut across the grey sky, and red foliage stands out against the green jungle. The scene is Henri Rousseau's Tiger in a Tropical Storm.

Painted in 1891, it was the first of the jungle pictures for which the French artist is chiefly remembered. A flash of lightning lights up the tiger as it prepares to pounce on its prey amid a raging gale. The painting is held by the National Gallery.
