A white bandage covers the angel's eyes, and a small bunch of white flowers rests in its hand. Two boys carry it on a wooden stretcher across barren brown land: one in black bows his head, the other, in a brown jacket, looks straight at the viewer. The scene is Hugo Simberg's The Wounded Angel.

In 1903 Simberg, a symbolist painter, finished the work, now among his most recognizable. In a 2006 Ateneum vote it was named the national painting, and it remains in that museum's collection. Notice the blood on the angel's wing and the boys' solemn faces.
