Dim forest light falls on a fair-haired princess in a white gown walking between two hunched trolls. Thick tree trunks and moss-covered boulders rise behind them, with dark woodland glimpsed beyond. The trolls' brown, lumpy bodies blend into the ground like stones. The scene is John Bauer's watercolour The Princess and the Trolls.
In 1913 Bauer created illustrations for Helena Nyblom's fairy tale Bortbytingarna, including this one. They were published in the Bland tomtar och troll story collections, and the painting has belonged to the Nationalmuseum since 1914. Notice how the princess's pale figure stands out against the earthy browns and greens.
