An autumn riverbank of reeds and dark trees frames John William Waterhouse's The Lady of Shalott. A long-haired woman in white sits in a black boat, a patterned tapestry trailing over its side. Candles burn at the bow beneath a pale distant sky.

In 1888 Waterhouse depicted the ending of Alfred, Lord Tennyson's 1832 poem of the same name. It is the first of three versions he painted of the character and one of his best-known works. Its style follows the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, although the group had split decades earlier. The painting is held by Tate Britain in London.
