A small dark boat sits in the golden reflection of the setting sun. Beyond it, a dark tug with a smoking funnel pulls a pale, tall-masted warship across calm water under an orange and gold sky. The scene comes from J. M. W. Turner's painting The Fighting Temeraire.

The full title tells the story: an old warship towed in 1838 to her last berth to be broken up. The English artist painted it in oil that year and exhibited it at the Royal Academy in 1839. Notice how faintly the old ship glows beside the dark tug. It hangs in the National Gallery.
