Radiant light surrounds a woman in white holding a child as white-bearded Väinämöinen, in a red cloak, stands in a boat by the shore. A crowd watches from the slope, and a barefoot man in white sits on the jetty. A rowing boat crosses the lake beyond. The scene comes from Akseli Gallen-Kallela's The Departure of Väinämöinen.

It was completed in 1906 and belongs to the Hämeenlinna Art Museum. It illustrates the final, fiftieth poem of the Kalevala, in which Väinämöinen departs. Notice how his red cloak and long white beard set the old sage apart from the onlookers on the shore.
