Snow weighs down the branches of a foreground spruce, and behind it brown-gold rapids surge between snowy banks. Ice clings to the shore, and a snow-covered spruce forest climbs the slope against a grey sky. The image is based on Akseli Gallen-Kallela's painting Imatra in Winter.

The raw force of the rapids lies at the heart of the work. Gallen-Kallela painted it in oil on canvas in 1893 as an expression of his admiration for the powers of nature, and it belongs to the Ateneum Art Museum collection. Winter sharpens the contrast: open water keeps moving while banks and forest lie under snow.
