A pale stone wall and large lobed leaves frame a grey stoneware jug filled with red poppies and blue cornflowers. A potted herb grows beside it, and fallen petals and a seed pod lie on the wooden table. The poppy petals are the most demanding part: their folds are built from many closely related reds.

The jug's grey body is painted in a few broad patches, and the stone wall's beige fills large areas. The green foliage and grey-green table boards are similarly open. The narrow cornflower petal tips and black poppy centres are the smallest work.

How to get started

  1. Preparation: Check that the package contains all the supplies. Have a glass of water and paper towels nearby for cleaning brushes.
  2. Work order: Start from the top of the canvas and work downwards. This way, you avoid your hand touching wet paint as the work progresses.
  3. One color at a time: Paint all areas of the same number at once. Keep paint cups closed when not in use to prevent acrylic paint from drying.
  4. Brush maintenance: Wash and dry the brush thoroughly each time you change colors. If light paint doesn't cover the number, let it dry and add another layer.
