Craft Kits for Adults: Time and Mess Compared

3 min read

The easiest way to choose craft kits for adults is to ask two questions: how much time do you really have, and how much are you willing to clean up afterwards? For a single evening, go for scratch art or a bead kit. For something that lasts for weeks, go for embroidery, diamond painting or a larger paint by numbers.

The hours are for our own kits. The other times are rough guides, because they depend on the kit. At two hours an evening, 25–45 hours is about 13–22 evenings.

Done in an evening

Scratch art is the tidiest place to start. The outlines are already printed, and you scratch away the coating with a pen to reveal gold and colour underneath. An A5 or A4 picture usually takes one evening, and you brush the fine dust away with a soft brush. Our guide explains how scratch art works, and you'll find the pictures under scratch art.

A bead kit or candle making also fits one sitting. Tip the beads into a bowl so they don't end up on the floor, and clear the table before you melt any wax. We don't sell these, so try a local craft shop.

A few evenings

A small canvas is a good first painting. A 20 × 20 cm paint by numbers takes 5–10 hours. Our small paint by numbers kits come already stretched on a wooden frame, so you can hang the picture as soon as the paint has dried.

Needle felting is quiet work on the sofa, but it leaves wool fluff and the needle is sharp, so keep a felting mat under it. Again, your local craft shop is the place to look.

Longer projects

Paint by numbers. A 40 × 50 cm kit usually takes 25–45 hours. You get a printed canvas, numbered acrylic paints and brushes, and you add a glass of water. Browse our paint by numbers kits.

Diamond painting. You place tiny drills on the canvas with a pen, following the symbols. The kit has a canvas, drills, a pen, wax and a sorting tray. With round drills it takes roughly a third less time than the same size in square drills. Browse our diamond painting kits.

Embroidery or cross stitch makes next to no mess and is easy to pick up for ten minutes, but a larger piece can take weeks. We don't sell these either.

Where to start

Start with the shortest project you can see yourself finishing. An evening of scratch art tells you if you like fine, careful work. If you do, a small canvas is a sensible next step.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to be able to draw?

No. Scratch art has printed outlines, paint by numbers has numbered areas, and diamond painting has symbols that show where each drill goes.

Do I need to buy anything else?

Not with our kits. Paint by numbers needs only a glass of water from the kitchen, and A5, A4 and 30 × 40 cm scratch art pictures come with a scratching tool.
