Bending over a hole cut in the ice, a woman in a pale headscarf rinses white laundry, one hand on a brown tub. Beyond the snowy ice stand red, snow-roofed sheds and houses, with spruces and bare trees behind. The painting is Pekka Halonen's Washing on the Ice (Avannolla), from 1900.

Halonen painted it as one of his two works for the Finnish pavilion in Paris in 1900. Twelve paintings were sent there, all meant to show Finnish trades and livelihoods. The work belongs to the Ateneum collection of the Finnish National Gallery.

How to get started

  1. Preparation: Check that the package contains all the supplies. Have a glass of water and paper towels nearby for cleaning brushes.
  2. Work order: Start from the top of the canvas and work downwards. This way, you avoid your hand touching wet paint as the work progresses.
  3. One color at a time: Paint all areas of the same number at once. Keep paint cups closed when not in use to prevent acrylic paint from drying.
  4. Brush maintenance: Wash and dry the brush thoroughly each time you change colors. If light paint doesn't cover the number, let it dry and add another layer.
