Soft pinkish light breaks through layered cloud above a fog-filled valley, where rocky ridges, trees and a distant mountain rise through the mist. A man in a dark coat, walking stick in hand, stands on a craggy outcrop in Caspar David Friedrich's Wanderer above the Sea of Fog.

The figure seen from behind is the detail everyone remembers: we look over the fog almost from where he stands. Friedrich painted it in 1818, and it has become an emblem of German Romanticism. It hangs in the Hamburger Kunsthalle. The sea of fog stretches into the distance without end.

How to get started

  1. Preparation: Check that the package contains all the supplies. Have a glass of water and paper towels nearby for cleaning brushes.
  2. Work order: Start from the top of the canvas and work downwards. This way, you avoid your hand touching wet paint as the work progresses.
  3. One color at a time: Paint all areas of the same number at once. Keep paint cups closed when not in use to prevent acrylic paint from drying.
  4. Brush maintenance: Wash and dry the brush thoroughly each time you change colors. If light paint doesn't cover the number, let it dry and add another layer.
