Wind catches the white dresses and long veils of two women walking along the edge of the sea. One holds her hat in place and grips a parasol, while the other carries a straw hat trimmed with flowers and glances aside. The painting is Walk on the Beach by Joaquín Sorolla.

The Sorolla Museum holds this 1909 oil on canvas by the Spanish painter. Notice how the dresses are never simply white: their shadows carry blue, grey and violet, and the same light returns in the foam of the breaking wave.

How to get started

  1. Preparation: Check that the package contains all the supplies. Have a glass of water and paper towels nearby for cleaning brushes.
  2. Work order: Start from the top of the canvas and work downwards. This way, you avoid your hand touching wet paint as the work progresses.
  3. One color at a time: Paint all areas of the same number at once. Keep paint cups closed when not in use to prevent acrylic paint from drying.
  4. Brush maintenance: Wash and dry the brush thoroughly each time you change colors. If light paint doesn't cover the number, let it dry and add another layer.
