Cloud shadow darkens the city gates and the water below them, while sunlight further back catches a church tower and red rooftops. Johannes Vermeer's View of Delft, from 1661, looks across the river. Small figures stand on the sandy bank, and the buildings reflect in still water.

View of Delft shows Vermeer's hometown and is among his best-known works. Views of a city across water were popular in the Netherlands then, celebrating the city and its trade. The painting has been held at the Mauritshuis in The Hague since 1822.

How to get started

  1. Preparation: Check that the package contains all the supplies. Have a glass of water and paper towels nearby for cleaning brushes.
  2. Work order: Start from the top of the canvas and work downwards. This way, you avoid your hand touching wet paint as the work progresses.
  3. One color at a time: Paint all areas of the same number at once. Keep paint cups closed when not in use to prevent acrylic paint from drying.
  4. Brush maintenance: Wash and dry the brush thoroughly each time you change colors. If light paint doesn't cover the number, let it dry and add another layer.
