Soft daylight falls across a tangle of tomato plants. Ripe orange-red tomatoes stand out among clusters of pale green and yellowish unripe fruit, while thin stakes rise behind the plants in greyish violet light. Blue-green stems curl between the leaves. The image is based on Pekka Halonen's painting Tomatoes (Tomaatteja).

He painted it in 1913 in oil on cardboard. The work belongs to the Antell collection of the Ateneum Art Museum, part of the Finnish National Gallery. Its subject is an everyday garden crop, with leaves and fruit broken into loose patches of colour.

How to get started

  1. Preparation: Check that the package contains all the supplies. Have a glass of water and paper towels nearby for cleaning brushes.
  2. Work order: Start from the top of the canvas and work downwards. This way, you avoid your hand touching wet paint as the work progresses.
  3. One color at a time: Paint all areas of the same number at once. Keep paint cups closed when not in use to prevent acrylic paint from drying.
  4. Brush maintenance: Wash and dry the brush thoroughly each time you change colors. If light paint doesn't cover the number, let it dry and add another layer.
