Storm clouds darken the sky over a jungle where wind bends branches and grass in one direction. In Henri Rousseau's Tiger in a Tropical Storm, a striped tiger crouches in tall grass, jaws open and teeth bared. A red bush glows between the trunks, and broad dark leaves fill the foreground.

In 1891, Rousseau completed this oil painting, the first of the jungle scenes for which the French naive painter is chiefly remembered. It now belongs to the National Gallery. Lit by a flash of lightning, the tiger is preparing to pounce on its prey amid a raging gale.

How to get started

  1. Preparation: Check that the package contains all the supplies. Have a glass of water and paper towels nearby for cleaning brushes.
  2. Work order: Start from the top of the canvas and work downwards. This way, you avoid your hand touching wet paint as the work progresses.
  3. One color at a time: Paint all areas of the same number at once. Keep paint cups closed when not in use to prevent acrylic paint from drying.
  4. Brush maintenance: Wash and dry the brush thoroughly each time you change colors. If light paint doesn't cover the number, let it dry and add another layer.
