Among moss-covered boulders and tall tree trunks, a fair-haired princess in a white dress walks between two trolls. One troll has a long nose, grey hair and colourful beads; the other has a tall, pointed head. In John Bauer's The Princess and the Trolls, the dark spruce forest sets off her white figure.

In 1913 the Swedish artist painted this watercolour for Helena Nyblom's fairy tale Bortbytingarna, and it was published in the story collection Bland tomtar och troll. Nationalmuseum has held it since 1914. Notice the contrast: the trolls lumber along hunched and heavy, while the princess walks upright and light.

How to get started

  1. Preparation: Check that the package contains all the supplies. Have a glass of water and paper towels nearby for cleaning brushes.
  2. Work order: Start from the top of the canvas and work downwards. This way, you avoid your hand touching wet paint as the work progresses.
  3. One color at a time: Paint all areas of the same number at once. Keep paint cups closed when not in use to prevent acrylic paint from drying.
  4. Brush maintenance: Wash and dry the brush thoroughly each time you change colors. If light paint doesn't cover the number, let it dry and add another layer.
