In Helsinki's harbour, sailing boats rest on still water while a white domed church rises above the city. Dark smoke trails from a steamship's funnel. Albert Edelfelt painted The Nyländska Jaktklubben Harbour in Helsinki in 1899; it belongs to the Finnish National Gallery. The most demanding part is the tight cluster of sails, where pale sailcloth overlaps in narrow wedges shifting from cream to grey.

The rowing boat in the foreground and the orange boat behind it stand out as clear shapes. Grey-blue water and a pale grey cloudy sky fill large areas in broad, shifting patches. Many small accent colours add detail between them.

How to get started

  1. Preparation: Check that the package contains all the supplies. Have a glass of water and paper towels nearby for cleaning brushes.
  2. Work order: Start from the top of the canvas and work downwards. This way, you avoid your hand touching wet paint as the work progresses.
  3. One color at a time: Paint all areas of the same number at once. Keep paint cups closed when not in use to prevent acrylic paint from drying.
  4. Brush maintenance: Wash and dry the brush thoroughly each time you change colors. If light paint doesn't cover the number, let it dry and add another layer.
