On the open sea after a storm, a yellow sun burns through orange and violet clouds while a green wave breaks into white foam. Shipwreck survivors cling to a fragment of mast, and one of them waves a red cloth. The scene is Ivan Aivazovsky's The Ninth Wave.

Russian marine painter Aivazovsky completed the work in 1850, and it became his best-known painting. It belongs to the collection of the Russian Museum. Worth noticing is how the morning light reflects as a golden path across the water and singles out the small group of people amid the waves.

How to get started

  1. Preparation: Check that the package contains all the supplies. Have a glass of water and paper towels nearby for cleaning brushes.
  2. Work order: Start from the top of the canvas and work downwards. This way, you avoid your hand touching wet paint as the work progresses.
  3. One color at a time: Paint all areas of the same number at once. Keep paint cups closed when not in use to prevent acrylic paint from drying.
  4. Brush maintenance: Wash and dry the brush thoroughly each time you change colors. If light paint doesn't cover the number, let it dry and add another layer.
