A billiard table stands in a red-walled café, its long shadow stretched across yellow floorboards. Hanging lamps spin rings of light around themselves. A man in a pale coat waits beside the table, and the counter holds a row of bottles and pink flowers. The scene is Vincent van Gogh's The Night Café.

In September 1888, van Gogh painted this café at night in Arles, the southern French town where he lived. Notice how the red walls clash with the green ceiling and how the lamps' yellow glow carries into the floor strokes. The original is held at the Yale University Art Gallery.

How to get started

  1. Preparation: Check that the package contains all the supplies. Have a glass of water and paper towels nearby for cleaning brushes.
  2. Work order: Start from the top of the canvas and work downwards. This way, you avoid your hand touching wet paint as the work progresses.
  3. One color at a time: Paint all areas of the same number at once. Keep paint cups closed when not in use to prevent acrylic paint from drying.
  4. Brush maintenance: Wash and dry the brush thoroughly each time you change colors. If light paint doesn't cover the number, let it dry and add another layer.
