On the riverbank a dog watches a hay wagon pulled by horses through the water. A cottage wall and roof show between the trees on the left, and beyond the foliage a sunlit meadow opens. Overhead, grey rain clouds break into patches of blue. The scene is John Constable's The Hay Wain.

The Hay Wain was completed in 1821 under the original title Landscape: Noon. It shows the countryside on the River Stour between Suffolk and Essex. Regarded as Constable's most famous image and a key work of Romanticism, it ranks among the most popular English paintings and hangs in the National Gallery in London.

How to get started

  1. Preparation: Check that the package contains all the supplies. Have a glass of water and paper towels nearby for cleaning brushes.
  2. Work order: Start from the top of the canvas and work downwards. This way, you avoid your hand touching wet paint as the work progresses.
  3. One color at a time: Paint all areas of the same number at once. Keep paint cups closed when not in use to prevent acrylic paint from drying.
  4. Brush maintenance: Wash and dry the brush thoroughly each time you change colors. If light paint doesn't cover the number, let it dry and add another layer.
