A narrow title panel with Japanese characters, the signature beside it, is easy to miss. Below it unfolds Katsushika Hokusai's The Great Wave off Kanagawa: a deep blue wave curls over three boats in claw-like foam crests, while a small snow-capped Mount Fuji sits against a pale yellow-green sky.

The Great Wave off Kanagawa is an ukiyo-e woodblock print from around 1831, late in the Edo period, and opens Hokusai's series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji. An impression is held by the British Museum. Notice how distant Fuji sits in the trough of the wave, echoing one of its foam crests.

How to get started

  1. Preparation: Check that the package contains all the supplies. Have a glass of water and paper towels nearby for cleaning brushes.
  2. Work order: Start from the top of the canvas and work downwards. This way, you avoid your hand touching wet paint as the work progresses.
  3. One color at a time: Paint all areas of the same number at once. Keep paint cups closed when not in use to prevent acrylic paint from drying.
  4. Brush maintenance: Wash and dry the brush thoroughly each time you change colors. If light paint doesn't cover the number, let it dry and add another layer.
