Two capercaillies square up on a mossy clearing, tails fanned, a red brow above each eye. A fallen birch trunk crosses the foreground, a lake and wooded hills open up behind, and a brown bird stands among the trees. The scene is Ferdinand von Wright's painting The Fighting Capercaillies.

Its composition rests on the golden ratio. Painted in 1886, it is regarded as one of von Wright's principal works. Birds were his favourite subject from childhood. Like his brothers Magnus and Wilhelm, he based his art on scientific observation, seen in the meticulous plumage. The painting belongs to the Finnish National Gallery.

How to get started

  1. Preparation: Check that the package contains all the supplies. Have a glass of water and paper towels nearby for cleaning brushes.
  2. Work order: Start from the top of the canvas and work downwards. This way, you avoid your hand touching wet paint as the work progresses.
  3. One color at a time: Paint all areas of the same number at once. Keep paint cups closed when not in use to prevent acrylic paint from drying.
  4. Brush maintenance: Wash and dry the brush thoroughly each time you change colors. If light paint doesn't cover the number, let it dry and add another layer.
