A white flower rises above the tall grass, and behind it an untamed garden grows up to the walls of a red house. In Carl Larsson's The Cottage (Stugan), the orange roof, white chimney and wide many-paned windows show through the foliage. A leafy tree stands beside the house, and a low wooden lid sits in the foreground.

The Cottage, completed in 1899, belongs to the collection of the Nationalmuseum. Notice how the house is not put on display: shrubs and young trees cover much of its lower part, while a summer sky with drifting clouds opens above the roof.

How to get started

  1. Preparation: Check that the package contains all the supplies. Have a glass of water and paper towels nearby for cleaning brushes.
  2. Work order: Start from the top of the canvas and work downwards. This way, you avoid your hand touching wet paint as the work progresses.
  3. One color at a time: Paint all areas of the same number at once. Keep paint cups closed when not in use to prevent acrylic paint from drying.
  4. Brush maintenance: Wash and dry the brush thoroughly each time you change colors. If light paint doesn't cover the number, let it dry and add another layer.
