Stars burst in greenish-yellow halos over a dark river, and lights from the far bank stretch into the water as rippling gold streaks. Two figures walk side by side on the grassy foreground bank near moored boats. The painting is Vincent van Gogh's Starry Night Over the Rhône from 1888.

Van Gogh painted it in Arles on the bank of the Rhône, a short walk from the Yellow House he was renting at the time. The night sky became one of his most famous subjects, returning in Café Terrace at Night and The Starry Night. It now hangs in the Musée d'Orsay.

How to get started

  1. Preparation: Check that the package contains all the supplies. Have a glass of water and paper towels nearby for cleaning brushes.
  2. Work order: Start from the top of the canvas and work downwards. This way, you avoid your hand touching wet paint as the work progresses.
  3. One color at a time: Paint all areas of the same number at once. Keep paint cups closed when not in use to prevent acrylic paint from drying.
  4. Brush maintenance: Wash and dry the brush thoroughly each time you change colors. If light paint doesn't cover the number, let it dry and add another layer.
