Grey spring light pales on dark floodwater, where tree trunks and branches are mirrored as brown and rust-red streaks. Rings of ripples break the reflection into winding patches. Dry, pale tussocks of grass line the banks, and one clump reaches into the water. The picture is Gustaf Fjaestad's painting Spring Flood (Vårflom).

The National Museum of Art, Architecture and Design holds the work, completed in 1909. Notice how the trees appear almost only as reflections on the surface. A grey and lilac shimmer of sky lies near the bank, while dark mirrored shapes fill the deeper part of the pool.

How to get started

  1. Preparation: Check that the package contains all the supplies. Have a glass of water and paper towels nearby for cleaning brushes.
  2. Work order: Start from the top of the canvas and work downwards. This way, you avoid your hand touching wet paint as the work progresses.
  3. One color at a time: Paint all areas of the same number at once. Keep paint cups closed when not in use to prevent acrylic paint from drying.
  4. Brush maintenance: Wash and dry the brush thoroughly each time you change colors. If light paint doesn't cover the number, let it dry and add another layer.
