Summer light filtering through apple leaves scatters blue shadows across a lace-edged tablecloth. Rose-patterned plates hold cinnamon buns, jam cookies and sponge cake beside a gold-coloured coffee pot and cups. Greyish blue shadow and off-white cloth are the most common tones, so the dappled pattern is painted in large areas.

Cinnamon bun swirls, the red centres of the jam cookies and the bowl of berries hold the finest detail. Reflections on the coffee pot are built from many small patches of colour. The straw hat with its pink ribbon and the grey wooden planks along the cloth are painted as broader surfaces.

How to get started

  1. Preparation: Check that the package contains all the supplies. Have a glass of water and paper towels nearby for cleaning brushes.
  2. Work order: Start from the top of the canvas and work downwards. This way, you avoid your hand touching wet paint as the work progresses.
  3. One color at a time: Paint all areas of the same number at once. Keep paint cups closed when not in use to prevent acrylic paint from drying.
  4. Brush maintenance: Wash and dry the brush thoroughly each time you change colors. If light paint doesn't cover the number, let it dry and add another layer.
