An open yellow beak and outstretched talons catch the eye as a sea eagle lands on its nest, wings spread, in a painting by Bruno Liljefors. Downy chicks crouch in the nest of twigs, a dead tree trunk reaches into the cloudy sky, and a grey-blue sea rolls behind with whitecaps.

Sea Eagle's Nest dates from 1907 and belongs to the Nationalmuseum collection. Worth noticing is how the eagle is caught in motion: feathers fanned, head turned toward the young. Warm browns and golden yellows tie the birds, the nest and the shoreline shrubs together, while the sea stays cool behind them.

How to get started

  1. Preparation: Check that the package contains all the supplies. Have a glass of water and paper towels nearby for cleaning brushes.
  2. Work order: Start from the top of the canvas and work downwards. This way, you avoid your hand touching wet paint as the work progresses.
  3. One color at a time: Paint all areas of the same number at once. Keep paint cups closed when not in use to prevent acrylic paint from drying.
  4. Brush maintenance: Wash and dry the brush thoroughly each time you change colors. If light paint doesn't cover the number, let it dry and add another layer.
