After a June rain, puddles on the paths of a rose garden mirror the sky. Roses climb a turquoise gazebo and the rope-linked posts. A gardener in a straw hat prunes a bush beside a blue bucket, a couple shares an umbrella on a white bench, and a black bird tugs at a worm.

Dark green fills the rose foliage, and green runs as clipped hedges around the beds in long, quick bands. The beige path fills broad areas until puddle reflections break it up. The finest work is in the roses, each bloom a small area of red, orange, yellow or pink.

How to get started

  1. Preparation: Check that the package contains all the supplies. Have a glass of water and paper towels nearby for cleaning brushes.
  2. Work order: Start from the top of the canvas and work downwards. This way, you avoid your hand touching wet paint as the work progresses.
  3. One color at a time: Paint all areas of the same number at once. Keep paint cups closed when not in use to prevent acrylic paint from drying.
  4. Brush maintenance: Wash and dry the brush thoroughly each time you change colors. If light paint doesn't cover the number, let it dry and add another layer.
