Along a country road in Provence, a dark cypress rises into a swirling blue night sky between a star and a thin crescent moon. Golden wheat lines the roadside, and a horse-drawn cart and two walkers travel the road. The painting is Vincent van Gogh's Road with Cypress and Star.

Completed in 1890, it was the last painting van Gogh produced in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, and it is also called Country Road in Provence by Night. His post-Impressionist style turns the sky into circling eddies and the wheat into slanted strokes. It belongs to the Kröller-Müller Museum's large van Gogh collection in Otterlo, the Netherlands.

How to get started

  1. Preparation: Check that the package contains all the supplies. Have a glass of water and paper towels nearby for cleaning brushes.
  2. Work order: Start from the top of the canvas and work downwards. This way, you avoid your hand touching wet paint as the work progresses.
  3. One color at a time: Paint all areas of the same number at once. Keep paint cups closed when not in use to prevent acrylic paint from drying.
  4. Brush maintenance: Wash and dry the brush thoroughly each time you change colors. If light paint doesn't cover the number, let it dry and add another layer.
