Eye-shaped motifs repeat across the woman's gown among triangles, spirals and gold squares. Her dark hair and pale face rise from a golden background, fingers clasped at her chest. Gustav Klimt completed Adele Bloch-Bauer I in 1907; it now hangs in the Neue Galerie.

Gold leaf combined with oil paint defines the portrait, the final and most fully representative work of Klimt's golden phase. The sitter's husband, Viennese banker and sugar producer Ferdinand Bloch-Bauer, commissioned it. Seized by the Nazis in 1941, it was displayed at the Belvedere. A second portrait of Adele followed in 1912.

How to get started

  1. Preparation: Check that the package contains all the supplies. Have a glass of water and paper towels nearby for cleaning brushes.
  2. Work order: Start from the top of the canvas and work downwards. This way, you avoid your hand touching wet paint as the work progresses.
  3. One color at a time: Paint all areas of the same number at once. Keep paint cups closed when not in use to prevent acrylic paint from drying.
  4. Brush maintenance: Wash and dry the brush thoroughly each time you change colors. If light paint doesn't cover the number, let it dry and add another layer.
