Pink and white peonies swell over the rim of a turquoise basin on a stone ledge, a single bud reaching up on its stem. Pruning shears, a lemon and a few scalloped leaves rest beside it among fallen petals. The blackish-brown backdrop fills in quickly as large, even areas, as does the near-black shadow below.

The peony petals are the most demanding part: coral, salmon pink and creamy white overlap in small shapes around yellow centres. The shears and lemon leaves are similarly detailed, while the grey stone and the basin's deep blue side fill in as broader patches.

How to get started

  1. Preparation: Check that the package contains all the supplies. Have a glass of water and paper towels nearby for cleaning brushes.
  2. Work order: Start from the top of the canvas and work downwards. This way, you avoid your hand touching wet paint as the work progresses.
  3. One color at a time: Paint all areas of the same number at once. Keep paint cups closed when not in use to prevent acrylic paint from drying.
  4. Brush maintenance: Wash and dry the brush thoroughly each time you change colors. If light paint doesn't cover the number, let it dry and add another layer.
