Set against a deep black background, a bronze urn on a stone ledge overflows with peonies in coral, cherry red and soft pink. A blue tit perches on the rim beside hanging clusters of cherries. The black background and dark foliage cover much of the canvas and are painted as broad, even areas.

The pale pink peony's layered petals are the most demanding part, each fold built from small light and rosy shapes. The blue tit's plumage and the glints on the cherries come from a set of small accent shades. Around the buds at the top, the black background is the easiest area to paint.

How to get started

  1. Preparation: Check that the package contains all the supplies. Have a glass of water and paper towels nearby for cleaning brushes.
  2. Work order: Start from the top of the canvas and work downwards. This way, you avoid your hand touching wet paint as the work progresses.
  3. One color at a time: Paint all areas of the same number at once. Keep paint cups closed when not in use to prevent acrylic paint from drying.
  4. Brush maintenance: Wash and dry the brush thoroughly each time you change colors. If light paint doesn't cover the number, let it dry and add another layer.
