Fluffy red-backed shrike nestlings sit in a row on a dry branch at the crest of a sunny slope, outlined against a clear blue sky. In Bruno Liljefors's Nestlings of Red-Backed Shrike, the sandy bank below them is covered in broad green leaves, yellow flowers and thin bare twigs.

Painted in 1887, the work now belongs to the collection of the Nationalmuseum. Liljefors placed the birds high in the composition and gave much of the picture to the vegetation of the bank. The nestlings' mottled brown plumage merges with the tones of the dry earth, and only the blue sky sets them clearly apart.

How to get started

  1. Preparation: Check that the package contains all the supplies. Have a glass of water and paper towels nearby for cleaning brushes.
  2. Work order: Start from the top of the canvas and work downwards. This way, you avoid your hand touching wet paint as the work progresses.
  3. One color at a time: Paint all areas of the same number at once. Keep paint cups closed when not in use to prevent acrylic paint from drying.
  4. Brush maintenance: Wash and dry the brush thoroughly each time you change colors. If light paint doesn't cover the number, let it dry and add another layer.
