Sunlight streams through a tall window into a wood-panelled room where a figure with a long fair braid leans over a writing desk. In Carl Larsson's Letter-Writing, a candle and a small green statuette stand on the desk, potted plants bloom along the window, and a red house is visible beyond the panes.

Completed in 1912 and known in Swedish as Brevskrivning, the painting belongs to the collection of the Nationalmuseum. Notice how the striped blouse, the blue chair cushions and the green plant stand pick up colours across the room, while the white stair railing frames the scene along one edge.

How to get started

  1. Preparation: Check that the package contains all the supplies. Have a glass of water and paper towels nearby for cleaning brushes.
  2. Work order: Start from the top of the canvas and work downwards. This way, you avoid your hand touching wet paint as the work progresses.
  3. One color at a time: Paint all areas of the same number at once. Keep paint cups closed when not in use to prevent acrylic paint from drying.
  4. Brush maintenance: Wash and dry the brush thoroughly each time you change colors. If light paint doesn't cover the number, let it dry and add another layer.
