Choose the right Paint by Numbers kit
How to Choose Your First Paint by Numbers Kit
A 40x50 cm kit is often the easiest place to start. It gives you enough detail for a satisfying result without turning the project into fiddly work straight away. Use the filters on this page to browse kits that are better suited to beginners.
For a first project, the goal is not maximum detail. It is choosing something that feels calm and enjoyable from the start.
What Affects Detail and Difficulty in Paint by Numbers
The challenge level comes from the combination of size, colour count and how dense the paint areas are. Clearer designs with larger sections feel more relaxed, while smaller and denser details make the project more demanding and better suited to several evenings of painting. Even a lower-colour kit can feel surprisingly time-consuming if the image is dense.
On each product page, you can compare size, colour count, number of paint areas and estimated duration before choosing.
What Is Included in a Paint by Numbers Kit
Each Paint by Numbers kit includes the essentials to get started: a numbered canvas, acrylic paints, 4 brushes and a colour chart. The included brushes are enough for a first project, but if you want better control, we recommend adding a brush set as well.

Choose a Paint by Numbers kit you actually want to finish
This collection brings together paint by numbers kits for adults in different sizes, subjects and detail levels. Explore animal paint by numbers kits or abstract paint by numbers kits to start with a subject you enjoy. Some suit a calmer first project, whilst others work better as slower evening-by-evening painting with finer sections and more colour changes. The difference is not just colour count. Image clarity, canvas size and the number of small fragmented areas all affect whether a kit feels smooth or fiddly to paint. A good choice is not always the most dramatic design, but the one whose painting rhythm suits you.

Frequently asked questions
Are paint by numbers kits for adults suitable for beginners?
No, it should not feel difficult to start, as long as you choose a clear design rather than the most fragmented option in the collection. Paint by Numbers suits beginners because the image is already mapped into numbered areas, so you do not have to figure everything out from scratch. For the smoothest first experience, start with a calmer composition and leave the most detailed kits until later.
How can I tell whether a kit will feel relaxed or detail-heavy?
Colour count is only part of the story. The overall feel also depends on how fragmented the image is, how many small sections it has, and how tightly the detail is packed across the canvas. On the product page you can compare this more precisely, because it also shows region density alongside the other product details.
What size should I choose for my first kit?
For most people, 40x50 cm is the safest place to start. It gives you a proper finished result without making the project feel unnecessarily long. If you would rather begin with something smaller and quicker, you can also browse our smaller 20x20 paint by numbers projects.
Do I need extra brushes or supplies straight away?
Not usually. A standard kit already includes the basics you need to begin: numbered canvas, acrylic paints, 4 brushes and a colour chart. If you later realise you enjoy finer sections and cleaner edges, our Paint by Numbers × SINOART brush set is a very sensible upgrade. For frames, easels and other extras, see our paint by numbers supplies collection.
How long does one paint by numbers project usually take?
That depends on the canvas size, the level of detail and the pace you like to paint at. A clearer design can move along over a few evenings, while a more intricate one may take a couple of weeks of steady sessions. Even two kits in the same size can feel very different if one has tighter detail and more fragmented paint areas. If you want to compare before ordering, each product page also shows an estimated duration. For a smoother first start, you can also read our paint by numbers instructions for beginners.
Should I choose a ready-made kit or custom paint by numbers from my own photo?
A ready-made kit is usually the better choice if you want an easier first project and prefer to see the subject, style and detail level before you buy. Custom paint by numbers makes more sense when the image itself matters most, whether that is a family photo, a pet portrait or a gift with personal meaning.
