Trees on a small wooded island cast dark vertical reflections into the lake. Beyond them rise bluish hills under a cloudy sky, whose light returns on the water as pale patches. Broad pale streaks cut across the mirror-still surface. Akseli Gallen-Kallela painted Lake Keitele in 1905, and one version is held by the National Gallery in London.

Gallen-Kallela returned to this lake view four times in total. Besides the National Gallery canvas, one version belongs to the Lahti Art Museum, another is privately owned and kept at the Gallen-Kallela Museum, and the fourth was acquired by The National Museum of Western Art in Tokyo in 2021.

How to get started

  1. Preparation: Check that the package contains all the supplies. Have a glass of water and paper towels nearby for cleaning brushes.
  2. Work order: Start from the top of the canvas and work downwards. This way, you avoid your hand touching wet paint as the work progresses.
  3. One color at a time: Paint all areas of the same number at once. Keep paint cups closed when not in use to prevent acrylic paint from drying.
  4. Brush maintenance: Wash and dry the brush thoroughly each time you change colors. If light paint doesn't cover the number, let it dry and add another layer.
