From a ridge, the view opens over a narrow strait whose still water mirrors a yellow evening sky. Spruce-covered headlands and a small island reflect in the surface, while the foreground holds an upturned root, dry branches and young spruces. The painting is Albert Edelfelt's Kaukola Ridge at Sunset.

Edelfelt completed the work in 1890 in Tammela, Häme, on the grounds of Saari Manor, owned by his wife Ella de la Chapelle. The view looks northwest across the strait between lakes Pyhäjärvi and Kuivajärvi. Counted among key works of the Golden Age of Finnish art, it belongs to the Finnish National Gallery.

How to get started

  1. Preparation: Check that the package contains all the supplies. Have a glass of water and paper towels nearby for cleaning brushes.
  2. Work order: Start from the top of the canvas and work downwards. This way, you avoid your hand touching wet paint as the work progresses.
  3. One color at a time: Paint all areas of the same number at once. Keep paint cups closed when not in use to prevent acrylic paint from drying.
  4. Brush maintenance: Wash and dry the brush thoroughly each time you change colors. If light paint doesn't cover the number, let it dry and add another layer.
