Under a wide-brimmed hat, a woman rests a hand against her chin, lost in thought. Dressed in a black gown and a blue apron, she stands beside a flower bed on a lakeshore, where orange lilies and red blooms surround a slender tree, while a rowing boat drifts across the lake. The scene is Carl Larsson's Karin by the Shore.

In 1908, Larsson painted this watercolour, now held by the Malmö Art Museum. Its pale, still lake mirrors the island's trees beneath a hazy sky. Against them, the woman's dark dress stands out sharply, while the figures in the boat stay tiny.

How to get started

  1. Preparation: Check that the package contains all the supplies. Have a glass of water and paper towels nearby for cleaning brushes.
  2. Work order: Start from the top of the canvas and work downwards. This way, you avoid your hand touching wet paint as the work progresses.
  3. One color at a time: Paint all areas of the same number at once. Keep paint cups closed when not in use to prevent acrylic paint from drying.
  4. Brush maintenance: Wash and dry the brush thoroughly each time you change colors. If light paint doesn't cover the number, let it dry and add another layer.
