A lone figure stands in a dark rowing boat on grey-green water. Beside it, the reflection of the orange sun runs as a broken streak. Beyond, the masts, cranes and chimneys of a harbour dissolve into blue haze, while clouds glow orange and pink above. The scene is Claude Monet's Impression, Sunrise, painted in 1872.

In Paris in April 1874, the painting was first shown at what became known as the Exhibition of the Impressionists, and it is credited with giving the movement its name. Notice how the harbour outlines melt into mist while only the sun and its reflection stay sharp.

How to get started

  1. Preparation: Check that the package contains all the supplies. Have a glass of water and paper towels nearby for cleaning brushes.
  2. Work order: Start from the top of the canvas and work downwards. This way, you avoid your hand touching wet paint as the work progresses.
  3. One color at a time: Paint all areas of the same number at once. Keep paint cups closed when not in use to prevent acrylic paint from drying.
  4. Brush maintenance: Wash and dry the brush thoroughly each time you change colors. If light paint doesn't cover the number, let it dry and add another layer.
