Imatra's rapids rush as yellow-green foam between snow-covered rocks. In the foreground stands a young spruce weighed down by snow, with slender birch trunks behind it. Icicles hang from the snowbanks over the water, and a frosted spruce forest rises on the far slope. Akseli Gallen-Kallela painted Imatra in Winter in 1893.

The force of the rapids is what the work is remembered for: Gallen-Kallela painted it as an expression of admiration for the power of nature. Done in oil on canvas, it belongs to the Ateneum Art Museum collection. Notice how the frozen edges and still forest set off the moving water.

How to get started

  1. Preparation: Check that the package contains all the supplies. Have a glass of water and paper towels nearby for cleaning brushes.
  2. Work order: Start from the top of the canvas and work downwards. This way, you avoid your hand touching wet paint as the work progresses.
  3. One color at a time: Paint all areas of the same number at once. Keep paint cups closed when not in use to prevent acrylic paint from drying.
  4. Brush maintenance: Wash and dry the brush thoroughly each time you change colors. If light paint doesn't cover the number, let it dry and add another layer.
