A crow glides across the grey-green sky towards jagged snowy peaks. Below, hunters carrying spears trudge downhill with a pack of dogs. A fire burns outside a house, and many tiny skaters cross the frozen ponds below. It is Pieter Bruegel the Elder's The Hunters in the Snow.

Painted in 1565, the Northern Renaissance work is one of a series showing different times of the year, five of which survive. The scene is set in deep winter, around December and January. It belongs to the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna. Bare trees lead the eye from the hunters down to the valley.

How to get started

  1. Preparation: Check that the package contains all the supplies. Have a glass of water and paper towels nearby for cleaning brushes.
  2. Work order: Start from the top of the canvas and work downwards. This way, you avoid your hand touching wet paint as the work progresses.
  3. One color at a time: Paint all areas of the same number at once. Keep paint cups closed when not in use to prevent acrylic paint from drying.
  4. Brush maintenance: Wash and dry the brush thoroughly each time you change colors. If light paint doesn't cover the number, let it dry and add another layer.
