Against a pale beige background, a woman stands playing a large round-bodied string instrument. She wears a red jacket and skirt, a patterned headscarf and a green and red striped shawl across her shoulders, while the strings run as thin lines across the picture. The painting is Anders Zorn's Hemlandstoner (Home Tunes).

In 1920 Zorn completed the work, which now belongs to the collection of the Nationalmuseum. Loose brushwork shows in the folds of the red costume and the shadows of the face, while the background stays almost empty. The title and the instrument tie the image to the music of home.

How to get started

  1. Preparation: Check that the package contains all the supplies. Have a glass of water and paper towels nearby for cleaning brushes.
  2. Work order: Start from the top of the canvas and work downwards. This way, you avoid your hand touching wet paint as the work progresses.
  3. One color at a time: Paint all areas of the same number at once. Keep paint cups closed when not in use to prevent acrylic paint from drying.
  4. Brush maintenance: Wash and dry the brush thoroughly each time you change colors. If light paint doesn't cover the number, let it dry and add another layer.
