At the edge of a spruce forest, snow weighs the dark green boughs into heavy curves, and blue sky shows between them. Some trees glow in warm light while others sit in blue shadow. On the open slope a white hare stands with its ears up, facing the viewer. The scene is Bruno Liljefors's Hare in Winter Landscape.

Hare in Winter Landscape dates from 1915. Worth noticing is how the white hare almost vanishes into the snow, picked out by its brown eyes, nose and black-tipped ears. The snow is never plain white: cream, off-white and pale blue shadows shift across the drifts.

How to get started

  1. Preparation: Check that the package contains all the supplies. Have a glass of water and paper towels nearby for cleaning brushes.
  2. Work order: Start from the top of the canvas and work downwards. This way, you avoid your hand touching wet paint as the work progresses.
  3. One color at a time: Paint all areas of the same number at once. Keep paint cups closed when not in use to prevent acrylic paint from drying.
  4. Brush maintenance: Wash and dry the brush thoroughly each time you change colors. If light paint doesn't cover the number, let it dry and add another layer.
