Muted autumn daylight falls on a forest floor where two foxes rest among brown and yellow leaves. The fox in front lies with its mouth open, while the other presses its head to the ground. Black-capped birds perch and flutter around a green bush. The painting is Bruno Liljefors's Foxes.

The Gothenburg Museum of Art holds this 1886 work, known in Swedish as Rävar. Liljefors places the animals in their surroundings: fur and feathers blend into the mix of leaves and grass, and the view stays low, at forest-floor level. Notice how alert birds and drowsy foxes share one moment.

How to get started

  1. Preparation: Check that the package contains all the supplies. Have a glass of water and paper towels nearby for cleaning brushes.
  2. Work order: Start from the top of the canvas and work downwards. This way, you avoid your hand touching wet paint as the work progresses.
  3. One color at a time: Paint all areas of the same number at once. Keep paint cups closed when not in use to prevent acrylic paint from drying.
  4. Brush maintenance: Wash and dry the brush thoroughly each time you change colors. If light paint doesn't cover the number, let it dry and add another layer.
