A white tail tip flashes in the dry grass. A red fox creeps over a mossy rise toward a weathered roundpole fence, its leaning stakes and grey rails crossing the scene. Beyond lies a golden meadow, a line of forest and a pale sky. The painting is Fox at Roundpole Fence by Bruno Liljefors.

The fox's orange coat echoes the autumn grass, so the animal seems to melt into the ground it crosses. Completed in 1912, the work is known in Swedish as Räv vid gärdesgård. Notice how the fox peers through gaps in the fence toward the open meadow.

How to get started

  1. Preparation: Check that the package contains all the supplies. Have a glass of water and paper towels nearby for cleaning brushes.
  2. Work order: Start from the top of the canvas and work downwards. This way, you avoid your hand touching wet paint as the work progresses.
  3. One color at a time: Paint all areas of the same number at once. Keep paint cups closed when not in use to prevent acrylic paint from drying.
  4. Brush maintenance: Wash and dry the brush thoroughly each time you change colors. If light paint doesn't cover the number, let it dry and add another layer.
