Morning light turns the mountain's slopes a rusty red, and snow streaks its dark summit. Rows of white clouds cross the blue sky, and the forest below is drawn as dense blue dots. A cartouche carries Japanese characters. The print is Katsushika Hokusai's Fine Wind, Clear Morning, also called Red Fuji.

Fine Wind, Clear Morning belongs to Hokusai's woodblock series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji and dates from around 1830. It has been called one of the simplest yet most outstanding Japanese prints, built from little more than a mountain, clouds and sky. An impression is held by the British Museum.

How to get started

  1. Preparation: Check that the package contains all the supplies. Have a glass of water and paper towels nearby for cleaning brushes.
  2. Work order: Start from the top of the canvas and work downwards. This way, you avoid your hand touching wet paint as the work progresses.
  3. One color at a time: Paint all areas of the same number at once. Keep paint cups closed when not in use to prevent acrylic paint from drying.
  4. Brush maintenance: Wash and dry the brush thoroughly each time you change colors. If light paint doesn't cover the number, let it dry and add another layer.
