A pale muzzle and white socks pick out the foal on the flowering slope. Beside it, an adult Exmoor pony grazes with its head down in the August heather. Red, pink and purple heather and yellow shrubs cover the steep hillside, while a stone wall runs down through them towards the sea.

Heather is the most demanding part: small, irregular patches of red, pink and violet alternate constantly, so the colour changes every few strokes. The ponies' coats break into similar small fields of orange and brown. The sea and sky move faster as broad dark blue and turquoise areas.

How to get started

  1. Preparation: Check that the package contains all the supplies. Have a glass of water and paper towels nearby for cleaning brushes.
  2. Work order: Start from the top of the canvas and work downwards. This way, you avoid your hand touching wet paint as the work progresses.
  3. One color at a time: Paint all areas of the same number at once. Keep paint cups closed when not in use to prevent acrylic paint from drying.
  4. Brush maintenance: Wash and dry the brush thoroughly each time you change colors. If light paint doesn't cover the number, let it dry and add another layer.
