Inside a long hall, a fire blazes in the hearth and candelabras with lit candles glow above a white tablecloth. Carl Larsson's Christmas Eve Dinner shows a line of people moving past the laden table. In front, a woman carries a golden vessel, while a cat on the floor reaches up towards the food. A bearded man rests in an armchair beside children.

Swedish Christmas Eve festivities are the subject of this 1904 watercolour by Larsson. Worth noticing are the row of goblets, the lace fringe of the tablecloth and the red frame of the chair. The painting belongs to the Bonnierska Porträttsamlingen collection.

How to get started

  1. Preparation: Check that the package contains all the supplies. Have a glass of water and paper towels nearby for cleaning brushes.
  2. Work order: Start from the top of the canvas and work downwards. This way, you avoid your hand touching wet paint as the work progresses.
  3. One color at a time: Paint all areas of the same number at once. Keep paint cups closed when not in use to prevent acrylic paint from drying.
  4. Brush maintenance: Wash and dry the brush thoroughly each time you change colors. If light paint doesn't cover the number, let it dry and add another layer.
